The Real Cost of a Cruise: 10 Expenses That Surprise First-Time Cruisers

You've probably seen the ads.

"7-Night Caribbean Cruise from $699!"

It sounds like an incredible deal.

And in many cases, it really is.

Cruising remains one of the best vacation values you'll find. Your accommodations, most meals, entertainment, transportation between destinations, and countless onboard activities are all wrapped into one vacation.

So why do some travelers come home wondering how a $699 cruise ended up costing twice that?

The answer usually isn't hidden fees.

It's the collection of optional purchases, daily service charges, and planning decisions that almost every cruiser makes once the vacation begins. Individually they don't seem like much. Together, they can add hundreds—or even thousands—of dollars to the total cost of your trip.

The good news?

Very few of these expenses are surprises if you know where to look.

Let's walk through the ones that catch first-time cruisers—and occasionally even seasoned travelers—off guard.

The Cruise Fare Is Only the Beginning

Cruises are still one of the best vacation values available.

Think about everything that's already included.

  • Your hotel moves with you.
  • Meals are included.
  • Entertainment is included.
  • Pools.
  • Shows.
  • Kids' programs.
  • Transportation between ports.

When you compare that to paying separately for hotels, restaurants, rental cars, and entertainment on a land vacation, cruising is often an incredible value.

But there are some extras worth planning for.

"It's Only Twenty Dollars..."

One of my favorite sayings is:

"It's never the big purchase that gets you. It's twenty dollars...twenty times."

That's exactly how cruise spending works.

  • Maybe you grab a specialty coffee every morning.
  • Order a couple of cocktails by the pool.
  • Take one shore excursion.
  • Book dinner at the steakhouse.
  • Buy Wi-Fi so you can check on the dog back home.
  • Individually, none of those purchases feels outrageous.

Together?

That's where people get surprised.

The Biggest Surprise? Gratuities.

Almost every major cruise line charges automatic daily gratuities.

These go toward the crew members working incredibly hard behind the scenes—your cabin steward, dining staff, galley crew, and many others you'll never even meet.

Most travelers are happy to pay them.

They just didn't realize they weren't already included in the cruise fare.

For a family of four on a week-long cruise, gratuities alone can easily total several hundred dollars.

We've put together a complete guide that explains how gratuities work, when they're included, and when they're not. (Coming soon!)

Drink Packages: Great Deal...or Expensive Mistake?

This is probably the question I answer more than any other.

"Should we buy the drink package?"

My answer is almost always...

"It depends."

If you're planning to enjoy cocktails by the pool, wine with dinner, bottled water throughout the day, and specialty coffees every morning, it may save you money.

If you're an occasional drinker?

It could cost far more than simply paying as you go.

That's exactly why I wrote our article:

👉 Is the Cruise Drink Package Worth It?

Instead of guessing, you can also use our Cruise Vacation Cost Planner, which estimates beverage package costs alongside gratuities, Wi-Fi, dining, excursions, and other onboard expenses.

Shore Excursions Add Up Quickly

I'll admit it.

I'm a sucker for excursions.

Whether it's exploring a historic town, taking a sailing trip, or finding a great local seafood restaurant, getting off the ship is part of the adventure.

But excursions can also become one of the biggest parts of your vacation budget.

You don't have to book one in every port.

In fact, some of my favorite cruise days have involved nothing more than wandering around town with no particular plan.

Wi-Fi Isn't Like Home

Many people assume Wi-Fi is just...there.

Unfortunately, that's not usually the case.

Some cruise fares now include internet.

Others charge separately.

Some allow one device.

Others charge for each additional device.

If staying connected is important, it's worth knowing exactly what's included before you board.

Don't Forget the Vacation Before the Vacation

This one catches people all the time.

The cruise might leave from Miami.

But how are you getting there?

  • Flights.
  • Hotels.
  • Airport transfers.
  • Parking.
  • Travel insurance.
  • Dinner the night before.

None of those costs appear on your cruise invoice.

They're still part of your vacation budget.

In fact, I usually recommend arriving at least one day before embarkation. Missing a cruise because of a delayed flight is an expensive lesson.

That's Why We Built This Tool

After answering the same budgeting questions over and over, I realized there wasn't a simple place where travelers could estimate their total cruise spending.

Most calculators ask you to enter numbers you don't know yet.

That's not very helpful.

So we built something different.

Our Cruise Vacation Cost Planner uses current cruise-line information and planning assumptions to estimate many of the most common onboard expenses before you sail.

It's not designed to replace your cruise confirmation.

It's designed to eliminate surprises.

Captain Bill's Tip ⚓

The cheapest cruise isn't always the least expensive vacation.

Sometimes spending a little more on a fare that includes drinks, Wi-Fi, gratuities, or onboard credit ends up saving money overall.

That's one of the reasons I enjoy helping people compare cruises.

We're not just looking at the advertised fare.

We're looking at the total value.

Ready to Plan Smarter?

If you're comparing cruises—or you've already booked one—I'd be happy to help you understand what's included, what isn't, and where you might be able to save money.

And before you sail, spend a few minutes with our Cruise Vacation Cost Planner. It may be the most valuable five minutes of your vacation planning.
